Chapter 13

Aiden woke up Monday morning ready to argue with his Chief on the matter of him being placed back on the case. After Lucy enjoyed the butterflies and their drive home, she insisted that she will handle it. He found her adorable. Little Lucy thinking that she could have some sway over his Chief was precious.

Aiden spent most of the morning lounging around his apartment. He ate, worked out, and did his laundry. He was just remembering how wonderful this past weekend was, but was interrupted when his phone rang. He looked down and saw it was his mother.

“Hi mom, what’s up?” Aiden was happy and it showed in his voice.

“Oh, nothing much, just seeing how your day went yesterday.” Aiden’s mother sounded better than she did when he was home.

“It was wonderful. We had a really good time and I showed her the butterfly garden.” Aiden was folding clothes while he talked.

“I heard you had some trouble at that breakfast place around the corner.” His mother was searching for something, but he was unsure about what.

“Yeah, the young boy that was waiting on us was ignoring me and tried to pass Lucy his phone number. It was taken care of though, so no worries.” Aiden wondered how she knew.

“Really?” Martha sounded weird.

“What is it mom? How did you find out and what are you trying to prove?” Aiden had finished his chores and was sitting on his couch waiting for her answer.

“Everyone talks sweetie. I just wanted to make sure that everything is okay between the two of you.” Martha sounded like she knew something he didn’t.

“Mom, we are fine. I’m still with her and I’m not looking for anyone else, if that’s where you’re trying to get this conversation to go. I’m not interest in any of the girls back home and I never will be. Get used to it.” Aiden nipped whatever his mother was trying to do, in the butt.

“Fine. I still think I know what’s best, but whatever. Why didn’t you come back to see me before you left?” Martha asked sorrowful.

“For multiple reasons. One, I didn’t want to put Lucy in an uncomfortable situation again and two, I was too worried there’d be another woman there that you would try to pimp me out too.” Aiden wasn’t shy with his mother anymore.

“I wasn’t going to. I guess you’ll call if we are coming up to see you on Wednesday.” His mother hung up without saying good-bye.

Aiden knew that his mother must have called because the rumors around town was more scandalous than what really happened. Yes, Lucy did get a phone number, but she didn’t want it. Most likely, people were talking like Lucy asked for it and that Aiden might get dumped.

He knew his hometown and they always talked down about outsiders. Good thing he didn’t go back home before leaving, his mother would’ve had a line of young women ready for his choosing.

Aiden just watched television until the time he needed to leave.
